What your water's hardness really means
Your water carries dissolved minerals — measured in PPM (parts per million, also called TDS). That number quietly shapes your glass, your fixtures, your appliances, and your monthly bills. Here's how to read it.
The hardness scale
For drinking, the 75–150 ppm range is generally considered the sweet spot. Water testing consistently above ~500 ppm is beyond the range typically recommended for drinking.
What hard water does to your home
These are the everyday signs L.A. homeowners see most — and they get worse the higher your number climbs:
- White, chalky spots on glasses & dishes after washing
- Cloudy film & scale on shower doors and glass
- Crusty buildup on faucets, sinks & showerheads
- Stubborn hard-water stains etched into windows
- Soap & detergent that won't lather well
- Laundry that fades and wears out faster
- Appliances & water heaters with a shorter lifespan
- Lower water pressure as scale narrows the pipes
And how it can affect you
Beyond the home, many people with very hard water also notice drier skin and hair that feels filmy or looks dull. Some research has explored links between high mineral or sodium intake and other health effects — so if your water tests consistently in the hard or very hard range, it's worth knowing your number.
How L.A. Elite helps
Hard water is why spots and scale keep coming back. Our hard-water stain removal restores etched glass, and our Saphir® hydrophobic & ceramic coatings make water bead up and roll off — so your glass stays clearer, longer, even with hard water.
